AVCE Single Award in Business

Course Code - BS01ADVBS

Entry Requirements

This course is offered as an element of Curriculum 2000. This qualification is specifically aimed at students who would like to gain an understanding of how the world of business works. It is suited therefore to students who are studying IT, social care and 'A' levels.

Duration

Students will normally undertake 3 units of study in year 1 and 3 units in year 2.

Progression

In some cases students may be able to complete a single award in one year. This can apply if the student is not completing a full award in another subject area.

The benefit of the single award in business is that unlike an 'A' level it is assignment based and therefore may be suited to students who do not like examinations. Many degree programmes now contain elements or modules of business within them and a knowledge of business may also be useful to those seeking employment.

 


 

AVCE Single Award in Information Technology

Course Code - CA07SAIT

Entry Requirements

This course is offered as an element of Curriculum 2000. This course is designed for students who wish to enhance their studies with the essential skills in IT necessary for modern life.

4 GCSE's (Grades A - C) normally including English or Maths or 4 Leaving Certificate passes (A - D) (English or Maths C3 or better).

Duration

Two year's part-time, complementing other study programmes. students will normally undertake 3 units of study in year one and three units in year two.

Course Content

The advanced single award is the equivalent of one A level and combines practical skills with knowledge, including:

Entry Requirements

This course is offered as an element of curriculum 2000 and will normally be delivered in combination with other full time study. The entry requirements will be in line with those published for the other main element of study:

Duration

2 Years part-time, complementing other study programme.

The course is equivalent to one traditional A level. It consists of core and option units. The options available have been chosen because they would be useful for progression into careers associated with the health or sports industries.

AVCE in Media Communication and Production with Information and Communication Technology

Course Code - ASOINDMP

Entry Requirements:

By interview, 4 GCSE's (A-C, one of which must be English) or equivalent. Mature students may also gain admission after interview.

Duration:

2 years full-time

Course Content:

The course is a preparation for higher level education or employment and is based on the very successful BTEC National Diploma in Media which was established in Limavady College in 1993 and has proven to be a highly rated course.

It offers a wide base of media theory and practice and now includes elements of web -design and multimedia. For the last five years students have run their own short-term radio station, Link FM, broadcasting to the Northwest Area. Students on the course have also produced videos for a number of industrial and public sector clients.

All students will follow a complementary programme of study in the key skills of Numeracy, Communications and Information Technology.

Assessment:

The assessments will be mostly practical coursework projects.

Progression:

Students have progressed to university degrees ranging from English, Drama and Media Studies to Journalism, Media Production and Computer Games Production. The increased internet and multimedia content will allow students to progress into university degrees in these growth areas.

This course also provides a good foundation for job opportunities in the Media Industry.

Career Opportunities

In addition to the traditional career opportunities in Journalism, Production, Technical Support and Presentation many new areas of work are opening up in Web-Design and Multimedia and for Writing and Production in New Media.

Successes

Past students are now working for The BBC, Highland Radio and the times in London as well as in more Local Media Organisations.

National Diploma in Countryside Management

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE's (A-C) or equivalent. Students should normally be able to demonstrate competence in English and Mathematics. The college welcomes applications from mature students who do not satisfy the entry requirements provided they can demonstrate that by virtue of other studies and / or experience, they are capable of coping with and benefiting from the course.

Duration

2 years full-time.

Course Content

The National Diploma in Countryside Management introduces students with an interest in the environment and a desire to work out of doors, to a range of Countryside Management settings.

The course explores the changing nature of the local rural economy and attempts to address the needs of the farming community and other country dwellers that have traditionally depended on the environment for a living and who now are seeking a more secure future. It successfully combines study of the rural economy, environment and its people.

It is also intended for individuals who want a direct route into employment in The Countryside Management industry or who are looking for a progression route to other Higher Education courses in Environmental subjects.

Career Opportunities

Employers who have shown an interest in supporting this course include: Limavady Borough Council, DOE Environmental Heritage Service, The National Trust, The Conservation Volunteers and The Department of Agriculture and Rural Management.

Job opportunities exist in rural tourism, estate management, rural development, forestry, coastal management, ecology and conservation.  


 

U of U Certificate In Foundation Studies For Mature Students

Access Course Course Code - AS07ACCESS

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course will be by interview and no formal qualifications are necessary. The interview panel will be assessing your commitment, ability and potential for completing the course. Students must be at least 21 years of age and should have been away from full-time education for at least 2 years.

Duration

2 years, 7 hours per week for 2 semesters (each 15 weeks) each year.

The areas of study are especially attractive, as they are available at the local University Campuses at Magee and Coleraine. Some students have also progressed to Universities In England including Reading and John Moore's, Liverpool.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of this course results in a qualification which is equivalent at least 2 'A' levels and 2 Gcse's. This qualification can be used on its own to secure employment or to improve chances of career progression.

Students successfully use this course to gain access to Higher Education at University or College. For many it is the first step on the road to professional development in their chosen career. Successful students from this course have already become Estate Agents, Nurses and are Working in Community Developments.

4 GCSE's (A to C) or equivalent grades at Leaving Cert. Applications are welcome from mature students who do not satisfy the normal entry requirements, provided that they can demonstrate suitability by merit and/or any relevant practical experience.

Duration

2 years full time. This full time course may appeal to those who have a strong desire to enhance their creative potential in the design field. It will suit those who have an enthusiastic, individual & motivated approach and who wish to embark on a future career in the furniture design field.

In the early stages the course will offer a comprehensive introduction to design skills, drawing development, computers in furniture design, professional studio practice and business studies. While at the same time allowing the student to express their own individual creativity. All modules offered within the programme will be assessed through practical and written assignments and relevant coursework.

2 years part-time. Two days per week. This part time course may appeal to those who have already gained some experience in working with wood or metal or who have a strong desire to enhance their creative potential in the design field and in their career prospects as craftspersons. All modules offered within the programme will be assessed through practical and written assignments and relevant coursework.

BTECDiploma Foundation Studies in Art & Design

Course Code - ADOIDART

Entry Requirements

GCE 'A' Level Art & Design and a minimum of 3 GCSE passes (A-C) or equivalent. A portfolio of work should be brought to interview. The normal minimum age of entry to this course is 18 years of age. Students aged 17 years at time of application should attain the normal / minimum entry age by December 31 in the year of entry to this course. The course welcomes applications from mature students (ie 21 years and over).

Duration

One year full-time or two years part-time.

Course Content

The new level 3 programme which recently replaced the existing provision has nine units of study and is structured specially to help post 'A' level students prepare and become equipped for degree level study in art and design. The course has a three stage structure: stage one - exploratory, stage two - pathway, stage three - confirmatory. The course is diagnostic in approach and each student has the opportunity to enhance and extend their existing skill base so that drawing, painting, photography, 3 D work, communication skills, research skills and time management, for example, are further developed in preparation for specialist degree level study, along with the many other key areas and skills focused upon during the course.

This course has been successfully preparing post 'A' level Art and Design students for Higher Education since 1991. During this time students have come from all over Eire, N. Ireland, Scotland and even England in order to undertake their Foundation Course. Since its conception the course has also enjoyed 98% progression to specialist degree courses and employment throughout the UK and Eire.

This unit based course structure provides students with insight and training into such areas of Art and Design study as:

All students who apply to the course will be interviewed and should bring along a portfolio of recent work which demonstrates an appropriate ability or potential to draw and / or to project craft / design ideas creatively.

Duration

2 years full-time through applications with appropriate experience may be offered exemption for one year.

This popular BTECNational Diploma in Design Crafts course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in the art, craft and design industry or to further and higher education or undergraduate degree programme in art, craft and / or design.

University of Ulster Diploma in Fine & Applied Arts [level B]

Course Code - AD05DFAA

This part-time programme will be of particular interest to those who have the desire to undertake study at degree level in Fine and Applied Arts, but who may have been unable due to the constraints and commitments of for example employment and family life.

Entry Requirements

This course welcomes applications from mature students (ie 21 years and over) who may have no formal qualifications in Art & Design but can demonstrate enthusiasm and genuine commitment to this level of creative practice and thought, and show the potential to Benefit from the programme.

A foundation course in Art and Design would greatly benefit those applying, though it is not essential.

All students who apply to the course will be interviewed and should bring to their interview a portfolio of creative work which demonstrates an aptitude in Fine & Applied Arts.

Duration

2 years part-time, 1 day per week, 30 weeks per year total

Course Content

The course is delivered in modules of study running parallel with the University's semester structure offering both innovative and traditional approaches to study. Art historical and critical studies compliment the students practical work throughout the course may choose a route from the following range of specialisms:

University of Ulster Diploma in Higher Education in

Fine &Applied Arts [DipHE level C]

Course Code - AD05HDFAA

The level C programme [equivalent to year 2 degree] is an extension of the level B diploma course and enables students who have successfully completed that course to further continue studies on a part-time basis to Dip HE level.

The course will enable students to further develop professional approach and insight, enabling them to enhance their own creative expression and encourage a lasting commitment to independent practice. Students are encouraged as part of the programme to undertake exhibiting their work in public in a group / or solo context.

Entry Requirements

Students must have successfully completed and passed all modules at level B and provide evidence of aptitude and potential appropriate to this level of study.

Duration

2 years part-time, 1 day per week, 30 weeks per year.

Course Content

The programme is delivered across each year in modules (4 per year) in which students study historical, contextual and critical issues, engage in personal and professional development and continue in deepening insights and practice in their own work.

Studies are supported through lecturers, seminars and tutorials and by visits to museums, galleries and art centres.

Students also may have the opportunity to go on the School of Art & Design study field trip.

Qualification Gained

University Of Ulster Diploma of higher education in Fine & Applied Arts. (240 cat points, Level C)

Successful candidates may apply for entry to level D (Year 3) of the BA Honours Fine and Applied Arts Course at the University of Ulster, Belfast.

The course is designed for adults with moderate and severe learning difficulties and runs on a part-time basis. It is comprised mostly of adults attending the local Benbradagh resource centre.

The course is accredited through the open college network covering areas such as Communications, Numeracy, IT, Personal Skills  


 

Workstart

Course Code - AD07BRID

A discrete full time course for 16-19 year old students with learning support needs.

The primary aim of the course is to prepare students for Jobskills Access Training. National skills profile certificates from OCR are awarded upon completion of modules of study in 4 core areas and at least 8 vocational areas.  


 

University of Ulster Diploma in Traditional Crafts [level B]

Course Code - AD05TRAD

Aim

This is a totally new course, which is unique within the UK and Ireland, aims to

re -established and rekindle interest in those traditional crafts that have been handed down from generation to generation, but which increasingly, are in danger of dying out.

The course encourages students to investigate the past in order to lay firm foundations for the future within the spectrum of traditional crafts.

Although having a practical underpinning the course does also encourage students to develop skills in research gathering, time management, setting up in business, net working, report and essay writing, and presentation techniques.

This course will be of interest to those adults and mature students who cannot commit to full-time study as the course is offered 1 day per week over two years.

Entry Requirements

The preferred entry requirements are as follows: One GCE 'A' Level pass with at least 4 GCSE passes, grade A-C, or an Advanced GNVQ qualification or equivalent.

However, given the unique nature of this course consideration may be given to applications who have not attained the above academic requirements but show convincing evidence of prior learning which indicates sufficient levels of ability, skill and motivation to successfully complete the course.

The course welcomes applications from mature students (ie 21 years and over) with no formal qualifications but who by virtue of other studies or experience, can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment as well as the potential to benefit from the course.

All applicants will be asked to attend for interview and bring with them evidence of craft experience.

Duration

This course is offered 2 years part-time, 1 day per week. Each year is divided into 2 semesters each of 12 weeks duration.

Tutorial Support

Each student is assigned a personal tutor / studies adviser who is available to offer encouragement, specialist advice and guidance on an ongoing basis throughout the duration of the course.

Individual, specialist careers advice is given in order to help students select the appropriate traditional crafts careers pathway.

Qualifications Gained

Students, who successfully complete the course, having past all modules, are awarded the University of Ulster Diploma in Traditional Crafts (level B).

This qualification is equivalent to the first year of Dip HE/BA (Hons) Degree course or 120 CAT points. Successful students have the opportunity to progress to the second year level C course.  


 

BTECNational Diploma and AVCE in Construction

Course Code - CS01NDCS

Entry Requirements

BTEC First Diploma / Gnvq Intermediate in Construction / Engineering or 4 GCSE passes (A-C) or equivalent. Mature students with or without previous Construction / Building experience will be accepted after a successful interview.

Duration

2 years full-time.

The course of 16 units will prepare students in Construction Technology, Surveying and Levelling, Design and the Built Environment for employment or entry to higher education. Work experience forms an essential part of this course.

Progression

Successful students from this course can proceed directly into employment in the fields of Architectural Technicians, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or progress into higher education to HND or numerous degree courses at University in Building, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Estate Management.

Key Features

The maximum we can take is 20 students. So if you are interested in Architecture, Civil Engineering or any of the other careers in Construction Design and Management, then apply early to confirm your place.

Most of last year's students are doing degrees and HNDs. Of the others most are in related GNVQ Intermediate &BTEC First Diploma in

employment. About half of all our BTEC national students in construction started In the first Diploma; all of them gained the BTEC National Diploma in Construction.

Entry Requirements

School leavers with a good secondary education, including at least one GCSE grade D or above. The course is also open to secondary school students on a link basis.

Duration

1 year full-time.

This one year full-time course will thoroughly equip students with the basic knowledge in construction skills and technician occupations. A work experience designed to give the trainees first hand experience of the working environment.

Progression

Successful students of this course can progress onto the BTEC National Diploma / GNVQ course or gain direct entry to Construction or Engineering Apprenticeships.

Work Placement

Students are placed in work placement for 2 weeks each year. It provides student with experience of work and insights into different job roles. It will help students to decide on career choices.

Apart from lectures, the course includes field trips, visits and residentials. In 1998 all the Travel and Tourism students had the opportunity of a one week visit to Majorca where they visited Marineland, water parks, the caves of Drach, took boat trips and a visit to Palma, The Island's capital. In 1999 students visited Torremolinos and the Costa del Sol. The trip included shopping for goodies at Malaga & Fuengrola markets.

Career Opportunities

The vast majority of students go to university while some move directly into employment, ie. Allen Gibbons is working for British Airways, Laura Scott is employed by Going Places, Nicola Orr employed by Co-Op Travel, Leanne Moore and Rosemary Alcorn are employed by Carlson Worldchoice and Bronagh McAteer gained employment with Ryanair in January. She is employed as a member of the cabin crew based at Dublin Airport and flies frequently to Spain and London.

There is a wide and interesting range of employment opportunities in the Tourism Industry and the demand for Tourism graduates is growing.

Travel and Tourism students can progress onto the many new degree courses at the University of Ulster or the Regional College in Sligo for example.  


 

GCE 'A' Level in Business & Accounting

Course Code - BS01GCEA

All 'A' levels are now modularised enabling the student to complete modules at various stages throughout the year. This will greatly reduce the pressure experienced by students who traditionally completed one large examination at the end of the year.

One 'A' level is made up of six units which are completed over 2 years. However, a student can decide to complete 3 units ie. half an 'A' level and be awarded with an 'AS' level qualification (advanced subsidiary) in year one.

You could take a subject to 'As' level in year one and then decide to take the full 'A' level in year two or you may decide to take up a new 'As' level instead.

Steven O'Connor has worked with Noel McMeel, one of Northern Ireland's most renowned chefs. He is currently working in Fitzroy's in Derry.

Margaret Forrest has worked with Paul Rankin as a pastry chef and is now in Sydney, Australia. She is employed as a pastry chef on one of the Harbour front restaurants.

Liam Corr works as human resource manager for the four star Killadea's Hotel in Naas, Co Kildare.

Congratulations Trevor McGuinness who has been appointed as a commis chef in the Crieff Hydro Hotel, Scotland. He is thoroughly enjoying his job and the use of all leisure facilities of this grade 'A' hotel.  


 

Higher National Certificate in Business & Finance

This course is aimed at mature students who wish to further their education in the pursuit of promotion, personal development or a change of career. The course offers specialist option modules for public sector employees.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have 1 GCE 'A' Level plus 4 GCSE / GCE 'O' Level passes or BTEC Nat. Dip. or Cert. or GNVQ Advanced qualification. Mature students who do not possess these qualifications may be accepted on the completion of a satisfactory interview.

Duration

2 years part-time, 1 day or 2 evenings per week. Each year is divided into two 12 week semesters.

Course Content

Management including accounting, personnel management, marketing, law, economics and structure of organisations.

Note: This is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and most professional bodies in the business and administration fields grant generous exemptions to holders of this high level qualification. Significant exemptions are also available from full and part-time degree courses at universities.

Advanced Food Hygiene (IEHO)

Sarah Holmes: After completing my level 2, I progressed to level 3 where I spent one day each week for the full year in TBF Thompson Engineering, Garvagh. Both placements gave me invaluable experience into the world of work. In these two years I have not only achieved my administration qualification but reached stage 3 in all my single subject OCR examinations.

In my third year at college my tutors encouraged me to join the second year of the Ampspar Medical Secretary's Diploma, which I successfully completed, and I worked 2 days per week in Kilrea Health Centre. I am employed currently as a secretary by Limavady College. I can honestly say that I am pursuing the career which I am interested in. All my training was worthwhile.

Students on this course have also a unique opportunity to gain further nationally recognised certificates and coaching awards through the practical sports studies unit. These include RYA Dinghy Sailing and BCU Kayaking, First Aid, Navigation, Dance and IFA Football Coaching. Successful students may progress into Higher Education to study a variety of subjects from Sports Science to Environmental Science.

NVQ Level 2, Activity Leadership in Sport, Recreation &Allied Occupations

Course Code - SLO7SR2

This course is designed for those wishing to work in the Sport, Recreation and Activity Industry or for those who wish to begin a learning pathway which will allow them access to academic qualifications in Sports Management and Sports Studies.

Entry Requirements

2 GCSE's at grades A-C or equivalent. Consideration will be given to those students who through experience or other qualifications can indicate that they are capable of meeting the course requirements.

Course Duration

The course will be delivered across a full calendar year commencing in September 2001. During the academic year two days per week will be devoted to 'In-College' delivery. This will be complemented by three days of placement with a range of Sport and Leisure providers. In the summer students will follow a five day week supervised placement.

Assessment will be by a combination of on course assignments, end of module examinations and work placement reports.

Tutorial Support

Each student will be allocated a personal tutor to assist and support them throughout the course.

Progression

Successful students may either progress to employment in the Sport, Leisure and Recreation Industry or to a series of level three study programmes in Sport and Leisure Studies. An example of such a programme is the Advanced GNVQ in Recreation and Leisure.

This is a new and challenging course where the practical and theoretical aspects of Activity Leadership are presented.  


 

Higher National Certificate in Science / Sports Studies

Course Code - SL05HNCSS

This Course Is Aimed At Those Individuals Who

  • Are currently employed in the Sport and Leisure Industry and want to enhance their career prospects
  • Want to be employed in the expanding Sport and Leisure Industry
  • Wish to Progress to Third Level Education

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years of age at the date of course commencement and have attained one of the following qualifications:

  • A pass in 1 subject at A Level and passes in 4 other GCSE subjects (A-C)
  • Passes in 2 subjects at 'AS' Level and passes in 3 other GCSE subjects (A-C)
  • GNVQ Advanced Science or Relevant Occupational Area
  • Grade C in 2 subjects at Higher Leaving Certificate level plus A grade D or Higher at ordinary or Higher Leaving Certificate level in 4 or more subjects
  • Certificate in Foundation Studies for Mature Students
  • Have attained an equivalent standard in a professional or other qualification recognised as equal to the above.

The college welcomes applications from mature students who do not satisfy the formal entry requirements but can demonstrate that by virtue of their studies and / or experience, they are capable of completing and benefiting from the course. All students who apply are subject to interview. This course can be the pathway to your future.

2 years part-time, 1 day per week. Each year is 2x15 week semesters.

BTEC National Diploma in Sports Management

Course Code - SLOINDSM

Entry Requirements

4GCSE's at grade C or their equivalent. Mature students who can demonstrate through experience that they could profit from the course will also be considered.

Duration

Students will follow a unit based programme of learning which incorporates many aspects of sports and outdoor education management. Each module is assessed through a combination of on course assignments and end of unit examination. This study programme is complimented by a series of practical placements in public and private recreation and leisure facilities.

Course Contents

This course will consist of four core units - Sport in Society, The Reflective Practitioner, Ethics and Values in Sport and eight optional units which will include such topics as Psychology for Sport Performance, Leadership in the Outdoors, Business in Sport and Expedition Skills.

Students on this course will also have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in coaching and activity awards.

Progression

Successful students can either progress to a range of HNC/D and degree level study programmes in management studies and outdoor education and recreation management or into employment in the leisure and recreation industry.

This is a new and exciting Sports Studies qualification which replaces and updates the College's former BTEC National Diploma in Leisure Studies.  


 

Jobskills Programme NVQ Level 2

Join the job skills programme. The college's recognised training organisation (known as CTEC) provides on the job training for those who prefer practical skills training with employers to continued full-time education.

Traineeship

Open to all school leavers who wish to work in the following areas:

  • Joinery
  • Bricklaying
  • Painting / Decorating
  • Motor Vehicle
  • Using IT

All preceding programmes are available to anyone between the age of 16 and 18 who are first-time entrants to the labour market or unemployed.

Trainees will follow a 1 or 2 day programme in college (depending on your chosen vocational area) and the rest of the week on employers premises gaining valuable practical training.

This may help many trainees enter Jobskills Training who otherwise may not have been able to do so.
